Listening…: John Cage

After I had been studying with him for two years, Schoenberg said, “In order to write music, you must have a feeling for harmony.” I explained to him that I had no feeling for harmony. He then said that I would always encounter an obstacle, that it would be as though I came to a wall through which I could not pass. I said, “In that case I will devote my life to beating my head against that wall.”

“Listening to Donald Judd” is a collaboration between BEK and KHIB.

In 1948, Pierre Schaeffer broadcast over French radio a “Concert of Noises”, a set of pieces composed entirely from recordings of train whistles, spinning tops, pots and pans, canal boats, percussive instruments and the occasional piano.

This week we read a text by Schaeffer on Acousmatics and listen to excerpts from works by Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry and others. “Listening to Donald Judd” is a collaboration between BEK and The Bergen National Academy of the Arts.

Murray Schafer in Vancouver in the early 70s, providing a critical documentation and examination of the urban and rural soundscapes surrounding us.

“Listening to Donald Judd” is a collaboration between BEK and The Bergen National Academy of the Arts.
